Librarian can play the following roles in IT environment:

1. Search intermediary: Usually users continues to perform simple searches on their own behalf, but in case of more specific searches they return to the librarian/information specialist who can perform the more complex searches, due to his/her vast knowledge of information resources.

2. A trainer: Sometimes users not possess an understanding of essential information gathering skills and tools. Therefore librarian has a critical role as end-user trainer. Training can be given regarding the use of e-journals, databases, search strategies, information searching skills etc.

3. Able to understand users needs: By the nature of their profession, librarians are service oriented. Librarians understand what the users want and are very close to the users information requirements than other professionals. They are also able to identify, evaluate and organize print as well as electronic information resources.

4. Librarians can also support provision of access to e-journals and can also host online tutorials. These are some of the opportunities for librarians in the IT era.

the terminlogy of the service render by the library professionals had dramatically changed, i do agree with you, and as you are well aware, with the inception of computer era, the titles and designations are fast dithering but the service will be the same.
reference service, as i always stress, play a major role in delivering the goods,unfortunately, this service is made mere mandatory act, but badly lacks practical approach.
reference service is limited, curtailed, else the scope is too large to handle even with group of professionals.
the role of librarian increases day by day like the fifth law library is a growing organism.

The opportunities are available in all sectors for librarians and they are playing deferent responsibilities from the traditional activities.

There are lots of requirements in corporate world for Librarians for organizing information and knowledge. As we are the real player on this area. Here we need to understand the requirement of the current scenario, then according to mold ourselves to adopt the current culture. Now question is what we need to do and how to transform from traditional librarian to modern approach. As per my experience the librarian should focus on the following

-Proactive approach (Role of Librarian is service oriented: He should know the need of the users. He should keep strong communication with community where ever he is working. keep interaction with all kind of personalties, Stakeholders, employees, clients, )

-Keeping up with the technology. (Technologies are changing frequently. i.e. Bloggs, Web 2.0, Web 3.0, Content mangement systems, OSS, XML, WSS 3.0, MOSS 2007 and lots of Information sources and database are there in the market, Factiva, GMID, LEXIS_NEXIS. Awareness of these resources )

-Innovative Ideas has to implement on the services of Information delivery. i.e. creation of Library Blogg; RSS feed, Feedback for information service quality, Web Portals, Implementing Social media .

-He should involve in the all kinds of community events , seminars where ever he is working for awareness and its related knoweldge resources.

-The Most requirement in current trends are Classification, cataloguing, Indexing, Thesaurus creations. Knowledge about all these in practically as well as theoretically. Please note that terminologies has change in the corporate world of these functions i.e. Taxonomy, Metadata creations, Content development, etc. and follow the standard i.e. Dublin core metadata, RDF, Bloom Taxonomies, Content descriptions etc.

-Management and interpersonal skills, Strong communication, presentation, collaboration & team building skills, Trainer and moderator.

LIbrary Professional has to come forward from the isolations, change the attititude and think like manager & leaders, Self motivated professional, improve themself and enhance there skills.

you are correct leela, right from begin ing the proffession is challenging provided the individual is having interest but as we progress situation is changed from location of documents to location of in formation, but currently users are keen in getting analised ready to use information ,and fastness in acquiring it . the challenge is this analysis to the users querry is the crucks of the problem usually librarians face. Hence in depth knowledge of the subjects and cpacity to analise and deliver , which you may acquire by experience and intraction with your users. All technologies only help to locate and present.
