UGC lifts ban on Distance PhDs, MPhil courses?? (Kindly Confirm)?

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has lifted the two -year-old ban on distance MPhil and PhD courses. The move comes after widespread protests by various universities. Many Open Learning Universities like IGNOU were protesting the ban on the ground that their respective laws, passed by Parliament or legislatures, allowed them to offer such courses.

UGC held a meeting on the issue last month, deciding to lift the ban. โ€œAn open university may be permitted to conduct MPhil/PhD programmes through distant education mode subject to condition that it does so strictly as per the provisions of the UGC Regulations,โ€ said the minutes of the meeting.

Speaking on the development, IGNOU vice-chancellor Rajasekharan Pillai said, โ€œWe will follow the rules but our regulations are already stricter than those of the UGC.โ€ย

Although, UGC has lifted the ban but it has put another condition for Phd โ€” the principal guide should be from the open university. The UGC had clamped the bar by notifying a rule โ€” the Minimum Standards and Procedure for Awards of MPhil/PhD Degree Regulation โ€” in 2009 saying research courses in the distant mode were of poor quality.ย

The regulations had put a question mark on the future of nearly 10,000 students pursuing such courses across the country.โ€œThere should not be any blanket ban on MPhil or PhD in distance mode. If institutions meet the required quality parameters, they should be allowed to offer such courses,โ€ said academic M. Madhava Menon, who has been asked by the HRD ministry to draft a policy on distance education. He said he would submit his report next month.

Inadequate infrastructure of many open universities is also a concern for carrying out research work.

A UGC official said the commissionโ€™s regulations were silent on the facilities, and a panel headed by academic S.P. Thyagrajan had been set up to suggest the requirements. โ€œWe will meet on September 15 to lay the guidelines,โ€ Thyagrajan said.

good News for Senior people

Great news for all.

Source of this article is dated back to August 2011! So I have reservation about authentication of this news. Secondly no other news sources carried this news and didn't find it on UGC website

it is good to hear. Hope it improves our higher education standards.

Dear,

ย Its write but the same time one has to follow UGC guidelines for the same. i.i

* Qualify entrance exam for PhD

* To appear before the committee

* to complete the 6 months for researchย methodologyย and course work.

* a workingย personalย must have a six month leave for the same.

These are some essential guidelines of the UGC, if a distance university is following the same. then no problem

Thanks for your comments sir,

I want toย peruse my Mphil in library science through distanceย mode, kindly suggest the names of fewย universities which offers Mphil through distance mode. It will be great help.ย

Regards,

Anil

it is very bad news for some extent because of the poor quality products are coming out in future i have seen the situation in ALAGAPPA UNIVERSITY AND VINAYAK MISSION UNIVERSITY AND SOME OTHER SOLD IT FOR A MONEY AND THE PEOPLE IS GETTING UGC SALARY BUT THE PERSONS WHO GOT NET/SET THEY REA\MAIN UNEMPLOYED THEN WHAT IS THE USE OF THE EFFORT OF DOING NET /SET WHERE DEGREES ARE SOLD OUT.
ONE MORE PROBLEM IS THAT WILL LOOSING THE VALUE IF THE OUT PUT IS MORE AS LIBRARY SCIENCE STUDENTS ARE MORE IN THE JOB MARKET SO GETTING LESS SALARY BECAUSE ANYBODY HAVE IT WITHOUT QUALITY IN THERE KNOWLEDGE

THIS IS ONLY GENERAL OPINION

I strongly agree with you

Dear Mr. Prakash Ji,

You are right, i am also agree........Standard must be there in Distance Education System............

Thanks for the valuable information. It is very important news for all library professionals. Distance education mode should improve the quality. But it is also very good news for working professionals. Because with the job they can continue the higher education with the above mentioned parameters. if such type of option will not be there. Then it will become very difficult to fulfill the dream of higher education with the job.

With this I would like to answer the query of one of our library professional. If person with NET/SET is having quality and confidence. I think no one can stop his/her for getting a good job.

Thanking you

regards,
Rajnish Sharma

Mr. Rajnish Sharma i agree with your answer forย  Mr. Prakash for the NET/ SET qualified students moving without job.
