MHRD and UGC Reply: Librarians are not Eligible for UGC Major and Minor Research Projects

Today I have received the following letter from MHRD in response to the LIS Links memorandum to the UGC as well as MHRD regarding inclusion of Librarians in the Eligibility Criteria of UGC Major and Minor Research Projects. The letter is quite demotivating to the entire Library and Information Science professionals. I am keying the text without any modification on my part (for original copy click here)

Very sad news Badan, I feel this is another step towards degrading the library profession from the teaching community. Why do our vocal library associations remain mute on such serious issues?

/p>

Dear Sir

It's a bed news for library professional. I think all association or only for name and fame.

Its slap on our profession and professional bodies...

Are we all sleeping? Lets fight against it....

Dear Professionals

we should strongly protest  against this reply by the UGC & MHRD ,it is like a death knell to librarians, who are doing more than the teachers ,if such attitude continues one day  they may say librarians are not eligible for organizing Library conferences  ,so every library professionals should think about this, we  should bring the to ILA & IASLIC national library association organisations to write in this regard

very good news Sirji.....

This is really sad and shameful, even they have not considered at once. Now Time has come to be unite once again and raise our voice against the decision of MHRD and UGC. We do play a vital role in research and they are saying that we can't get considered for Major or minor research project. Ridiculous. I am very upset then why they follow the criteria of UGC NET at the time of filling any big level post. Think twice.

It is very unfortunate and a planned misappropriation of some sort of group of people.  In one of International conference, one professor (Library & Information Science) in an open house conversation admitted that the professional Librarians are much current in technologies and resources as compare to teachers because of their routine involvement of facilitating information to users (professors and students).  Professional Librarians interact more with latest developed IT and databases as the representatives of developing companies are less interested to meet LIS Teachers.  On the other part, Librarians are more involved in development information systems to serve professional communities.

It will harm the information framing system and development of Indian Science & Technology.  It is well said, A NATIONAL CAN ONLY BE DEVELOPED IF ITS INFORMATION SYSTEM IS WELL DEVELOPED AND EFFICIENT TO DISSEMINATE FAST AND CURRENT INFORMATION.

At first i would like to thank Dr Badan for his tremendous efforts to update library professionals.

After reading this letter,i m fully depressed and feeling deprived. Is the UGC is joking or we are fools? Why UGC is showing dual behaviour with us,r we useless?Totally surprised with this letter.........

I think its time to come together and protest against this injustice by UGC,We need an another LOKPAL BILL(Librarypal Bill)

for our rights.

Now time has come to show the power of the librarians.......

Do or Die.

Now Or Never.........

its very big problem.

This is very sad news for Library professionals.

I think at this time all the Association Unite together take necessary action. Because the Qualification of Librarian, Dy. Librarian and  Asstt. Librarian is same as Prof. Asso., Prof. and Asstt. Prof. Both require NET/SET and Phd. This is our base to fight them.

The second things is Major and Minor Projects helps in the development of Library.

This time we unite and raise your voice.

Now as UGC and MHRD has clearly stated their point, so we should think of our next move, how to protest against their decision and make them change their decision. I don't know, if we can ask clarification for their actions? because if once they allowed us for major/ minor projects, then there must be some clarifications in their rules, then what happened this time, that they are not following those rules?
