Unemployment is increasing among library students, why?

Now-a-days, Library Courses are running in many govt.universities, colleges, and private institutions. Many youths are taking admission in these courses, but after completion of these courses, they are jobless. Govt. are doing nothing in this regard and many renowned personalities of this field are doing nothing for increasing the scope. Library students are getting very less salary in private institutions. In the case of UP, When Govt. had advertised for the post of sport teacher, etc, in each primary school, then why not for library professionals? Please share your opinion.

now a days not only library science professionals but also other subject professionals are facing this type of situation.it is quite true that the scope of lis profession smaller than other subject professionals  and another problem is the difrance between demand and supply is very high .

  1. The main reason is standard of this course is not remarkable.
  2. Standard of Library and and pay scale both are only a  laughing rule by the rule makers and rule followers.
  3. Reading Habits of library users is also very poor, so not much demand from the users end too.

Yes, the LIS profession is getting diluted by the distance education programs offered by many universities and colleges all over the country. People with a hope to get a job are attracted to these courses, but unfortunately end up unemployed or paid very low salary. In fact the distance education LIS courses are meant for working library professionals to enable them to move up in their career under promotion and not for direct recruitment. According to UGC/MHRD the LIS courses are professional or vocational courses which require practical training. In spite of this today the total number of professionals with distance education degrees seems to be more in number than the regular ones. The UGC and DEC approve these courses without any scientific bases and do not have any means to check the course quality. Every one knows about the few universities in South, but no one dares to complaint or write to UGC. Who is to blame? I think it is our LIS teachers who sit in various committees are responsible for this downfall. If they wish they can stop creating new departments and also advise the UGC and University authorities to put an end to distance education courses in LIS. Let us not forget the recent incident of a State University in AP which started LIS PhD in distant mode was thrashed by the media and the Government. Let us hope this message reaches all the concerned people who could put an end to this mess.

Dr. M. Koteswara Rao

Well said Dr. M. Koteswara Rao.

UGC should stop LIS Learning in distance mode or else Librarianship will become like "Clown" which anybody can ware.

what a burning point of this because the regular university only produce 30 to 40 students  but the open universities produce more then 1000 per year in each university then how will you get job opportunities. The some institution are provide open university Blib and Mlib course for promotion then the Clerk and Typist and others are complete the course they will occupied the jobs it will effect the regular course student the job will go down and appointment did not their in respect institution. My point is for open university will control the candidate in take and limit the seats it will benefit for the library course students

Thanx to all for viewing and sharing their valuable suggestion......

If their is a council eg.(Indian Librarians Council) similar to that of the Bar Council, Indian Nursing Councul, Medical Council of India etc which has been approved by UGC (See the UGC website)for Librarianship the quality of LIS education will increase and there by the quality and quantity(staff pattern ratio) of the library staffs also gets increased, through regular inspections and all.  But today"s libraries and librarians  in educational insitutions are like that of management or auhtroties servants, many of them are doing multiple jobs besides librarianship for gaining a 10,000 rs.salary.

its due to the unproper planning of LIS education systems in all universities in india

Most of the LIs professional doesnt know how to get information from the web properly, a very few of them can hanle it very easily, it shows the inequality of educational pattern

Many of the Indsitution needs just a human being which do the jonb of an ATM counter(i.e.librarian jobs is just giving and arranging books in the shelves)

.............but we should show them librarians are more than that...they think..so need of ILC with the recognition of UGC is a must for your problems sir

i agree with Dr. M. Koteswara Rao.
