Is RFID implementation in Libraries Posing a threat to LIS Professionals.

Use of RFID technology has revolutionized the working process of many a libraries whereas the use of this technology has eased the functionl aspects by providing self check out-check in, drop out-drop in facilities. I have heard of libraries where there is only one person looking after acquisition process and rest of the activities (issue/return) are performed through RFID. The users of library need not come personaly for returning their issued documents, but they can do so by dropping the document in a dropin window and the concerned document is automatically returned. Is this a wake up call for we professionals as less manpower is required in RFID implemented organizations. Please give your views and discuss.

It means the persong who are performing circulation duty (i.e. library assistants) shall have to do away with this duty and if we count the number of such persons in university and college libraries of India there may be lacs of people doing this job. And this much number of people would be replaced by RFID, leading a cut in jobs at that position (i.e. circulation).
Certainly RFID is  minimizing  the library manpower and this a great threat. I've seen in it in Gujrat where a tech. library having a collection more than 6000 is running by a librarian  and 3 other staffs. So virtually the management are saving a lot.

Yes Dr. Kaushik you are right...and this is still a begining. The consequences would be more clear when fifty percent libraries become RFID operational.

I think my dear friend Hussain might have got answer from Dr. Kaushik's point view now. There is surely a twist in the story and there is much more likely to come out of it.

Dear Mr.Handa, In India there were different types of libraries, national, public, special, academic library. If RFID to implement said libraries more staffs would be trained and they provide service to the users for save the time of users as well staffs. Dr.Kaushik said library having a collection more than 6000 is running by a librarian and 3 other staffs. Obviously, the management is saving a lot, but 4 professional staff is enough. If setup RFID and others tech in library staff should be more require due to overall growth and development of information society i.e. populations, educations, institutions, technologies and fast demand of information by the users.

Dear Hussain if we take the case of Gujrat library which Dr. Kaushik personaly visited and where RFID is implemented, two more persons could have been given  employment  opportunity hadn't there been RFID technique.

Dear handa, Maulana Azad Library, Aligarh Muslim University, Asia largest collections of as academic library there  RFID process is going on and have more than 100 staffs, At present more staff should be needed for that last few months ago library vacancy have advertised for instance  does not threat of the library staff sorting in future due to advent of new technology in libraries.

Thanks all friends and members of LISLinks especially my dear Hussain for contributing their valuable views.
Thanks Dear Mr.Tarvinder Singh Handa for your's good views and asking nice question regarding issue of latest technology.
