Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC)
An internationalĀ standardĀ digitalĀ formatĀ for the description ofĀ bibliographic items developed by theĀ Library of CongressĀ during the 1960s to facilitate the creation and dissemination of computerizedĀ catalogingĀ fromĀ libraryĀ to library within the same country and between countries. By 1971, the MARC format had become the national standard for dissemination of bibliographic data and by 1973, an international standard.

MARC 21
The version ofĀ MachineĀ ReadableĀ CatalogingĀ that supersededĀ USMARCĀ in 1999 with the harmonization of U.S. and Canadian MARCĀ formats. MARC 21 is supported byĀ OCLCĀ and is the current official MARCĀ standardĀ in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and numerous other countries.Ā Click hereĀ to learn more about MARC 21 development andĀ hereĀ to browse theĀ MARC 21 Concise Formats.

Universal Machine-Readable Cataloging (UNIMARC)The mostĀ comprehensiveĀ version of theĀ MARCĀ format forĀ catalogingĀ bibliographic items, UNIMARC was firstĀ publishedĀ in 1977 and is currently developed under the sponsorship of theĀ IFLAUniversalĀ Bibliographic ControlĀ and International MARC Core Activity (UBCIM) program to facilitate the international exchange ofĀ bibliographic records between national bibliographicagencies. See theĀ UNIMARC Manual: Bibliographic Format 1994Ā (IFLA) andĀ UNIMARC to MARC 21 Conversion SpecificationsĀ (Library of Congress)

USMARC
A set ofĀ standardsĀ for the representation and communication of bibliographicĀ dataĀ and relatedĀ informationĀ inĀ machine-readableĀ format, originally developed and maintained for use in the United States and superseded in 1999 byĀ MARC 21Ā with the harmonization of U.S. and CanadianĀ MARCĀ formats. USMARC governed three aspects ofĀ bibliographic description: (1)Ā record structure, (2)Ā content designation, and (3) the actual data content of theĀ record. TheĀ Library of CongressĀ is advised on the maintenance and development of MARC standards by theĀ U.S. MARC Advisory Committee, representing various user communities in North America
