ColonOS – An Initiative to Revive and Modernize Colon Classification

Inspired by the Vision of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan

Welcome to the ColonOS community on LIS Links!

This forum aims to bring together librarians, library science educators, researchers, students, and classification experts who are interested in the revival, modernization, and wider adoption of Colon Classification.

Developed by Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, Colon Classification is an important contribution to the field of Library and Information Science. Through ColonOS, we aim to explore how artificial intelligence and modern technology can help make this classification system more accessible and practical for contemporary libraries.

About ColonOS

ColonOS is an AI-powered classification initiative designed to generate class numbers based on the 6th edition of Colon Classification. It aims to support classification workflows while encouraging expert review and validation.

Objectives of This Forum

Discuss the present status and future of Colon Classification.

Connect libraries and professionals who use or study Colon Classification.

Share research, practical experiences, and classification challenges.

Invite expert feedback and validation of ColonOS-generated class numbers.

Explore the integration of ColonOS with Koha and other library systems.

Encourage collaborative research, pilot testing, and institutional partnerships.

An Invitation to LIS Professionals

We invite members to share their experiences and contribute to the discussion.

Is your library currently using Colon Classification?

What challenges do you face while applying Colon Classification in practice?

How can AI assist librarians in generating and validating class numbers?

Would your institution be interested in exploring or testing ColonOS?

How can LIS professionals work together to promote Colon Classification in India and internationally?

Our vision is to connect traditional classification knowledge with modern technology and encourage a new generation of librarians and researchers to explore Colon Classification.

Let us work together to revive, validate, and modernize Colon Classification through research, professional collaboration, and innovation.
