ColonOS: AI-Powered Colon Classification | Amit Suwal — Father of ColonOS

ColonOS: AI-Powered Colon Classification | Amit Suwal — Father of ColonOS

Inspired by the Vision of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan

Welcome to the ColonOS community on LIS Links — a platform for librarian's, Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals, researchers, educators, students, and classification experts interested in the future of Colon Classification.

ColonOS is an AI-powered library classification initiative developed by Amit Suwal, known as the Father of ColonOS. He is a Librarian at Anand Niketan PM SHRI EMRS, Kaprada, Gujarat, India. Through ColonOS, he aims to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and modern digital technologies can support the application of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan’s Colon Classification in contemporary library workflows.

The initiative seeks to connect traditional library science principles with modern technology through experimentation, professional collaboration, and expert validation.

What Is ColonOS?

ColonOS is an open-source initiative focused on modernizing the practical application of Colon Classification through AI-powered tools and digital library technologies.

The project is designed to generate class numbers based on the 6th edition of Colon Classification, with the aim of supporting classification workflows and encouraging professional review and validation.

ColonOS explores the intersection of:

  • Artificial Intelligence in Library and Information Science

  • Colon Classification and faceted knowledge organization

  • Automated library classification and class number generation

  • Digital libraries and information retrieval

  • Library automation and integrated library management systems

  • Koha integration and technology-enabled cataloguing workflows

ColonOS is a developing initiative, and its generated classification outputs should be reviewed against authoritative classification rules and validated by qualified professionals.

Why Colon Classification Still Matters

Dr. S. R. Ranganathan made significant contributions to Library and Information Science, particularly through Colon Classification and faceted classification.

In today's digital information environment, classification remains important for organizing knowledge, improving discoverability, and supporting effective information retrieval.

ColonOS aims to explore how modern technologies can help apply established classification principles to evolving subjects and contemporary information resources.

Objectives of the ColonOS Community on LIS Links

This community aims to encourage meaningful discussion, professional networking, and collaboration in the following areas:

  1. Reviving Colon Classification: Discuss its present status, practical challenges, and future possibilities.
  2. AI-Powered Library Classification: Explore AI-assisted class number generation and automated knowledge organization.
  3. Expert Review and Validation: Invite classification experts to evaluate ColonOS-generated class numbers and suggest improvements.
  4. Library Technology Integration: Explore potential integration with Koha and other library management systems.
  5. Research and Academic Collaboration: Encourage research discussions, pilot testing, case studies, and institutional partnerships.
  6. Digital Library Innovation: Investigate how modern tools can support classification, cataloguing, and information retrieval.

Join the Discussion: We Welcome LIS Professionals

Librarian, researchers, educators, students, and classification specialists are invited to share their knowledge and experience.

  • Is your library currently using Colon Classification?

  • What challenges do you encounter when assigning Colon Classification numbers?

  • How can AI assist librarian while preserving professional judgment?

  • Would your institution be interested in evaluating or pilot-testing ColonOS?

  • What improvements would make AI-assisted classification more useful for school, college, academic, and special libraries?

  • How can LIS professionals promote Colon Classification in India and internationally?

Your feedback can help identify practical requirements, improve workflows, and establish a stronger foundation for future development.

About Amit Suwal — Father of ColonOS
