Its the fault of our foolish admin who were sitting in the systems how the bull shit they do!

You are absolutely right but the current scenario for library science professionals is not good even not for freshers but also for the experienced professionals also.Their are a few organizations & colleges which are paying according to AICTE & UGC rules others are maintaining only fake datas about salary statement.

And I think we all knows this thing very well and we have to do something about this matter.

I appreciate your opinion.Keep it up........!

 Dear Sri Syed Farhan Ahmed,

Thank you for your post and addressing a matter of high concern.

I appreciate all the other comments.

I personally feel that the real reason is abundance of  Library professionals while the market need is far far less. As I estimate yearly requirement of Library Professionals in India does not exceed 1500 (One Thousand Five hundred only) while some Seven Thousand persons are passing out from various universities including Open Universities each year.

It is a market practice that if product or supply surpass demand, the price obviously goes down. I wonder if it ever happens that every State or UTs have just two universities to run Library Science Course and no distance mode, then only the situation will be opposite after say five to seven years.

I understand that many people will reject it out rightly as baseless or cruel or inhuman or the likes, but I am confident that unless the present trend is checked & stopped immediately, the situation will worsen further.

Now-a-days even government institutions too are recruiting librarians on contact basis and in interviews I witnessed cheap bargaining and pressurization for lower consolidated salaries. As a senior Co-professional I feel extremely distressed (and humiliated too) as I see how these fresh young minds full with energy and dreams are recruited like cattle!!

I admit Sri Irena Shettar's comments but differ in one aspect only. In spite of being enthusiastic and knowledgeable, many administration do not approve the minimum basic infrastructure.

In one occasion when I asked (virtually I pleaded ) for provision of Computers, I told "Look If he gets the computer, he will keep the catalogue in a searchable format and it will enable the users to go straightway and search for the requisite material" and one of the most seasoned administrators mockingly replied me "And the Library boy will sit idle and draw salary? No, No; Let him be involved with works! since he is being paid!!"

I instantly left the interview board and refused their further invitations to act as a member of interview board.

Sincerely,

Siddhartha S. Ray, Calcutta

Mai sabse pahle aplogon ka shukria ada karna chahta hu ki ummid se zyada aap logon ne is baat ko notice kiya aur aap logon ne apne-apne tarike se sujhao diye kyunki ye kisi ek ka masla nahi balki har ek LIS Professional ki yahi pareshani hai to kyun na sabse pahle hum log jitne log hai wo apni mail id is forum pe dalde taki hum log aapas me contact karke ispe kuch sahi kadam uthaye.Jo meri samajh me aya wo maine kiya ha aap logon ke sujhao ka intezar rahega.

Dear Sri Syed Farha Ahmed:

Aap ne sahi kaha hai. Par ye LIS Link yehi to hamare forum hai

Jis ke jariye hum kareeb 6000+ professionals koi vi masle ko address vi kar saktehai aur hal vi nikal sakte hai. Par ham sabko samajhdari se kaam lena chahiyen.

You see, in this particular aspect several different views came into light. like somebody proposed to close down Certificate Courses. Some advocated in favour of Correspondence Courses and some  of us expressed against it.

But the fact is as I am confident that excessive presence of qualified (?) people in the job market in LIS Profession is the root cause of financial devaluation of the profession and I am also sure that in case the inflow in NOT restricted with immediate effect, the situation will bound to worsen even further. You might have noticed that I have put an ? mark after the word qualified . Here in our country there is no norm or rule of mandatory practice of Continuing Education Programmes and periodical evaluation Programmes. For instance I did my M.lib Sc. around 30 years ago and I am still continuing with that qualification (without  professionally updating my knowledge formally only a few years ago!) !

Many of my friends are doing even without any formal or informal updation!! and we are (by virtue of age and professional seniority) working in quite higher posts but there is no mechanism to check whether we are still eligible for the posts we are holding in the backdrop of presently changed scenario? Never-the-less, when I went for admission to some Computer course a couple of years ago, some of the organizers exclaimed why me (being such a senior professional) wanted to pursue the course ( and depriving a young professional)? When I replied that I want to get myself  equipped with latest knowledge so that I can serve my organization better and presumably can provide befitting leadership to my colleagues. Then they realized my motto. When I was abroad,I witnessed that there was a rule to virtually renew our professional knowledge on definite interval of time. which is quite non-existant here in this country. This is not only for LIS professionals, but for many other more important professions too. You will see several old Doctors flaunting their MRCS or FRCP degrees which they have received some 20-30-40 years ago while the Medical Sciences in 60s and that of today  has huge & Huge gaps. So we have to have some regulatory authoritative rules which should have to be enforced immediately and ruthlessly in every profession to update ourselves. I am almost sure that if an examination is conducted  of advanced B. Lib Degrees, many of  the Doctorates in our profession will find it extremely difficult to score 40% marks. In this backdrop please review your thoughts whether Certificate course have lost their relevancy or not.

Sincerely,

Siddhartha S. Ray, Calcutta
