Medical Library Association of India (MLAI)

About Us: The need to organize the professional health science librarians into an active and effective forum was felt for quite some time. In order to give a practical shape to the need, it was only on August 18, 1980 a large number of prominent medical librarians/information scientists met in New Delhi and resolved to form the Medical Library Association of India. The dream came into reality only when it was registered in 1981 as a professional body under the societies registration act (India) 1860 with the following objectives:

Professional development for effective health science information and library systems and services through mutual cooperation.
To built up a body of professional experience that could be utilized in the smooth and effective functioning of the libraries in the field of biomedical and allied sciences.
To help libraries provide effective service to students and trainees, practicing physicians, field workers, research workers, teachers, administrators in the biomedical and allied fields.
To devise methods and techniques for the improvement in quality of collection, storage and dissemination of information.
To foster mutual cooperation and assistance among the various bio-medical libraries in the country and the library personnel working therein.
To serve as an institution for the exchange of professional knowledge and experience by organizing training courses, seminars, conferences, lectures workshops etc., and by publishing reports, monographs, bulletins, catalogues, bibliographies, journals etc., and to promote the interests of the biomedical and allied sciences, libraries and librarianship.
To cooperate with learned institutions and interested bodies – national and international in the furtherance of these objectives.
To issue appeals and applications for money and funds in the furtherance of the said objectives and to accept gifts, donations, subscriptions of cash and securities and of any property movable or immovable.

The search for an appropriate logo of the Association ended when the design submitted by Mr. P L Dhongade, Chief Librarian, Goa Medical College, Panaji, was accepted by the Executive Committee. The logo which now adorns the MLAI publications and communications depicts:

a) Caduceus (messenger’s wand) a device that today identifies the physicians, the wings came from Hermes, a messenger of the Greek Goods, whist the snake coiled staff originally belonged to Aesculapius, a Greek physician who became a God:

b) The map of the India depicts the headquarters of the Association at the top; and

c) The books surrounding the Map of India depict the library and information sciences
