Recto

a book is called a monograph, to distinguish it from serial .... The book covers were made of wood and covered with leather.

Dear Ms. Savita:

Thanks for your post and for a question which deals with Physical Bibliography as per the terms being used in LIS profession. They are called cover pages . A book possess two cover pages front cover page and back cover page. After the front cover page often there remains a blank page which is called Fly leaf. and then comes the title page  . There might be a confusion with casings. Casings are by and large cases within which costly/ deluxe edition books are kept. it is a separate cuboid box open onside to insert or take out the books.  as such cased books are filed, only the spine of the book remains exposed and all the three sides are encased within the casing. They save books from dusts and dirt. Many loose leaf journals are also kept in such boxes or casings. In foreign countries, often journals are kept in loose leafs in such cases. as you can understand, it makes consultation easy. You may see plenty of advertisements in Nature Science, Lancet, BMjs of  70's or 80's for such cases.

Jackets are sort of different things .They are actually called dust jackets.  They are separate sheet of paper (mostly glossy) over which the prints of front and back cover pages are printed. They usually cover the cover pages.

Sincerely,

Siddhartha Shankar Ray, Calcutta
