Library Profession may be extinct in future

In the era of e-Books, e-Journals, Online Databases it seems our role as a mediator (I mean to say we link the documents sources to our Users) is diminishing day by day. Users now can access the books journals online from their Laptop/desktop without any intervention of library staff. They just have to login and access the full text of the articles, books etc round the clock. The search interface are also so robust that the users can search from any angle like Author, Title, Publisher, Year wise, Keywords, Subject wise, Most recent, Ascending Order, Descending order, even the 1st issue of the 1sty volume of the Journals. Not even that they can access the article by giving any word from the full text also.

So the role of librarian to process and make it available to the users is of less value.

Both side of the coin will have its own supporters. I personally support your view. :-)

Ya this is right but library needs some change so that users attract towards it because internet cannot provide us every type of information at any place and at any time.

Profession will be tehre with new face,

but professionals without compatibility will definitely disappear

Dear Professionals,

The print version of information has its own distinction. Physicaly form of a document shall ever be preffered by readers dosen't matter how much we progress technically.

You imagine yourself reading something by a book and in another case reading the same from computer screen. The touch you will meet from/by a book can't be realized by reading on laptop/computer.

Perhaps you did not noticed the young generation. They search over Google siting in front of their home computer than to visit a library. Perhaps you also spend much time over Internet than to read a physical book. Just a thought.

 Agree....

But now the trend is changing. Nobody comes to library to see the Railway timing or Bioling Point of water. Because 90% of basic queries of reference source/information available at Google.com. Except textbook for appaering examination to clear Under Graduate or Post Graduate levels are being issued by students. But reference books, Research Journals required for S&T Professionals are available in electronic form and they access it at mouse click.

So my point is for college/university libraries the profession will remain in hybrid condition but in Special libraries theere is paradigm shift.

Life is the name of change  ,computer repalce tipewriter, books place digital or e-books it not mean in future these thing missed, they remain there in diffrent name,so librarian / professional remain there but in some mordern name with mordern  degree

Change is inevitable & if we cann't cope up with the change we cann't survive at all. so to sustain in this ever-changing world, we the Library Professionals, like others, have to upgrade our type of services in such a way that can attract the readers automatically.

Thinkabout this age of "Information explotion ", where Internet can serve the purpose of getting more information ---true, but it's the Information Provider( i.e. LIS Professionals) who can only provide the right information to the right person at the right moment.

So the sustainability of Library Profession will depend on the quality to deliver the service to the information-seekers.

I am also agreed with mr. Tarvinder news paper is a big eg. of it as we all know every morning we all wait impatiently for the news paper ,and the satisfaction with a cup of tea and news paper can,t be replaced with any other source
