Dear friend,
NET is a competitive exam at National Level in India but it has its own significance in getting Lectureship(lifelong validity) and Junior research fellowship. It helps in job-market especially govt.jobs..& considered equal to Ph.D.only in India.
Ph.D.is more important & it is absolutely essential for all in all subjects/knowledge spheres. It is considered as essential in a job-market at a global level. Nothing can replace "research"..Nowadays to become a 'Professor'/Principal Ph.D.is one of the essential qualifications..Even LIS Professionals need to do Ph.D.
On the whole,Ph.D. has comparitively more significant than NET.
Dear friend
NET is only a competition exam to any body for getting Lecturership or JRF but P.hd. is different to NET. when you have done PG or Mphil. then you can do P.hd. it's a docterate award after M.A., M.Sc., M.com. or any other PG degree. if you are not NET holder then you can do NET after P.hd.
If you want to do research in any subject then you can do P.hd. and after P.hd. you can do D.Litt. but NET is only a competition exam. that's why both are different.
I hv seen some of our friends have idea of NET is a competative exam! This is wrong idea, NET is not so, it is a qualifying exam. In a competative exam only limited number of candidates can qualify where as in NET there is no upper ceiling for qualifying number of candidates
Sir...
This is how a relevant and appropriate answer should be given ... u r great sir...thanx alot..
Sir,why then both are given the Same weightage,if they are different things.

Praisable Mam I agree with you,but why don't we recognise it at the earliest. Why our national bodies are not concerned about the outweightage of Ph.D over NET.

Esteemed Sir,Is Net a Competitive or a qualifying test,we have nothing to do with that, but we have to give the sidelines of Net vis a vis Ph.D

Dear Friend,
It is the decision of UGC..The reason may be all LIS professionals(especially youngsters) cannot do Ph.D.But if they have enough knowledge to become a lecturer or a scholar..NET & JRF is an instrument to test the capability of Postgraduates in Library & information science to teach/be a researcher (a Junior research scholar is paid UGC-Scholarship per month through the university if he has qualified JRF).
To promote brilliant M.L.I.Sc.qualified youngsters/professionals to undertake Govt.teaching positions/Assistant Librarian in Universities/College Librarian NET-EXAMINATION is conducted..
You do not worry,..either you pass your NET or do Ph.D. and get your career in the right direction..

net exam is only qualifing exam for job/s but Ph D is something special where it involves lot of work except for some but it itself stands different
Dear Sir,

NET is only the eligibility test, which checks your ability for Lecturership, or Research Activity. But PHD is a degree which makes you a researcher. You can give exam for NET before Phd and after M.Lib & Inf. Sc or after Phd. But for Phd you have to undergo a deep research. So both are different. Thanks.
Esteemed Sir,
how it checks the research and lecturer aptitude by making a little preparation of few months, nothing concerned with any sort of experience or other thing...when we are saying that Ph.D needs a deep research and hard labor of years together, why not then it weighs more than NET.
