sprint is one of the world's largest telecommunication companies as it offers mobile services to more than 53 million subscribers, and prior to being sold in May of 2006, offered local and long distance land line packages.

Large telecommunication companies like Sprint are notorious for having immense databases to keep track of all of the calls taking place on their network.ย  Sprint's database processes more than 365 million call detail records and operational measurements per day. The Sprint database is spread across 2.85 trillion database rows making it the database with the largest number of rows (data insertions if you will) in the world. At its peak, the database is subjected to more than 70,000 call detail record insertions per second.

The term sprint as you define relates with the telecommunication not with the library science.

Sir,

Sprint :is associated with the software development process.
Sprint is a time period (typically 2โ€“4 weeks) in which development occurs on a set of backlog items that the Team has committed to.

Sprint in Scrum ( Scrum is a process skeleton that contains sets of practices and predefined roles). [or an iteration in a XP team] is a time period (can be anything from 2 to 8 weeks) in which the team does whatever it can to develop software as per the features/ requirements that the Team has committed to. At the start of a sprint, the team gets together with stakeholders [ideally represented by single entity called a product owner] and works out with the product owner, what features or set of requirements [which is usually called sprint backlog] will they be completing in this sprint. During the sprint, the team works on the sprint backlog. The Sprint includes design, coding, testing, and documentation. Once a Sprint has started only the Scrum Team can add or remove items in Sprint backlog. Abnormal termination of Sprint is called for when the Sprint Goal no longer makes sense. At the end of the sprint, the team demonstrates actual working software. The team also gets together to review its progress and what can be done better in the next sprint. Hence, a sprint is a time boxed period of time in which the team develops software as per its commitment.

Related terms:

Sprint backlog : A prioritized list of tasks to be completed during the sprint.

Scrum is an iterative, incremental methodology for project management often seen in agile software development.Although Scrum was intended for management of software development projects, it can be used to run software maintenance teams, or as a general project/program management approach.

The Special Release Sprint -- Releasing software to production requires a special sprint known as the โ€œRelease Sprintโ€ Like any other sprint; but the release sprint team is dedicated ONLY to releasing the software during that period Used to package software, final regression tests, move through the various environments and release to production. No additional functionality is taken on for release. Can be made up of a subset of team members from the original development sprints.
