What steps should be taken by the lis professionals to improve the status of the profession ?

Most of the lay men still used to think that librarian has nothing more to do. Again today most of the surveys have shown that due to internet the percentage of the user of the libraries have reduced a lot and the profession is at a risk. So, what steps should be taken by the lis professionals to improve the status of the profession ?

i also agree with u sir

Yes, it is 100% true that the Computer Professionals are taking IT related library positions. But you know, we are the one to be blamed for this.  May be because of lack of awareness we do not have enough “System Librarians” globally.  I know institutions in US and in UAE looking for System Librarians for more than a year and keep-on positing advertisements for these highly paid (US$70,000- 110,000 P.A ) positions.  Senior Librarians should encourage the freshers to study the systems related courses so that in future we may have enough IT librarians in our community.

I also agree with Mr. Badan’s view saying that “the library professional should give much emphasis on emerging technologies”. This is a global problem! Here is a live example, an article published today in UAE based “The National” newspaper saying that a famous book seller has closed three of their branches in Dubai this year. Just visit the below link to foresee the danger for the print industry

This is the time for change! Let us move forward to accept the technology innovations such as IPAD, Kindle and Samsung Galaxy Tab which are highly expected to bring challenges for the book industry. Some of the well known publishers are already at work to channel their resources through these devices. Let us also join with them to serve our user community through these technology innovations.

Its really nice to hear the demand of system librarians in US..But here in india the notion is yet to come. Technology efficiency is today extremely needed in lis.. .very truly mentioned by u and Mr Badan..

We are top in this world because we provide knowlege to every one wheither he/she scientest or a shopkeeper,so alwayse proud to be an information scientest, whith out our information no one can win this world so Our Profession Is one of the best job in tis world

don't blame profession it is you who can change  layman thought providing best services to him whitout thinking what he think about our profession, definately on day he change his mind .today we are not librarian who store books, today we are information scientest  who provide information not to save our  job inplace to save others job.

Dear Professioanal

I regard the view of all professional but I say to all of you that when we write answer to keep the topic in mind because so many writer to go out of topic. Its necessary when we write something to set our mind on the topic.
