The formation of the Calcutta Public Library in 1836. was a non-governmental institution and was run on a proprietary basis.
The Imperial Library was formed in 1891 but the use of the library was restricted to the superior officers of the Government
Imperial Library and Calcutta Public Library (Merged)
As new amalgamated library, called Imperial Library Calcutta, was formally opened to the public on 30 January 1903
In 1907 Harinath De, the first Indian Librarian took over the charge of the Imperial Library India.
