I think there is no difference between automation and computerization.

Dear Sir,

Thanks for answering.

I think so, that's why i want to discuss with  all Library Professionals.

Regards,

Anita Mishra

Automation is a broader term and means carrying out any task with the help of machine which ultimately reduces or minimize the human effort. Computerization is a specific term. Library automation means using machines for carrying out the library work. It may include computers, photocopier or any kind of machine. Whereas Library computerization means carrying out library operations specifically with the help of computers.

Dear Sir,

Very well describe. Thanks for reply.

Regards,

Anita Mishra

dear Anita ji

I am fully agreed with definations given by Mr. Upneja

nice

Dear Professionals,

When it comes to differentiating between computerization and automation it has more than borderline difference.

Computerization: represent a broad term for using computers to assist in various activities. Automation, digitization etc are examples of computerization

Automation: represent procedures (and decisions) made while mechanizing activities done previously done manually. In case of library automation processes like acquisition, circulation and serial control are made to work with "least human interaction". Of course decisions are to be made in prior.

Dear Pant ji

I am in confusion that computerization is broader or automation ? as computerization means use of computers in library activities but automation is use all the machinery including computers to make library's work easy

Dear Professional,
Library Automation means, if we have to do library housekeeping operation such as acquisition, circulation, serial control & opac with the help of machine specially computer/others machinized tools, database replaced card catalogue, circulation of library document(check-in/check-out)becomes scanning & the verius bar codes involved.
digitization means the process putting library content into digital form and creating digital image. it can access electronically.
I think both library automation & library digitation are the complementary of each other.
