Entrepreneurial Scope of Information Science Professionals

Many of our colleagues are not getting the right job they deserved after their BLISc/MLISc degree. Some others even are shifting to other jobs, where MLISc / BLISc are not needed. Recently I go through some articles on alternative carriers in Librarianship. Even we are organizing one Regional Seminar on Entrepreneurial Approach of Library Professiona.... So I would like to have the opinion of my professionals colleagues regarding what else can be done with the BLISc/BLIB/MLISc degree? What are the possible scopes of a Librarian to be an entrepreneur?

you are right sir, what we can do?

Sir, You are absolutely right

 Ya

librarians could be a entrepreneurial such as

Information Agent

and others

Ya sir, we can form a firm which can be worked as esablisment of new library for newly opened colleges, institutes etc. and this firm will work from each aspect of library like classification, cataloguing, accessioning, ordering of serials, data entry, software development. etc. one more thing we can also create private library which's service will be chargable. its my opinion.

Good points Ravi. I will note it down.

Really a nice topic..! Very good initiation Sir..!!

Why not we concentrate on knowledge process outsourcing (KPO)? We can make information as commodity and can distribute the same to the circle of needed users / organisations, by payment basis.

As we are all aware about this is the era of information and the needs of information/data is playing a vital role. We should not act as information provider within the library premises, we should explore our services to reach our clientle, we can form a sector / distribution centre for information in the needed form like electronic or printed.

What I want to say is why not a BLISc, MLISc candidate act as knowledge provider, as even the IT people doing the same. I agreed that there is some special training need in our field to do this task, but it should not be a barrier for us. Is not it?

Need some marketing strategies in this type services. The information should reach the needed persons through our professionals.

We should change the traditional form of training and develope our skills. Remember, the term librarians are not enough in the quick growing world, we can change our faces as informationist to survive. We should be as not only a search engines, the real human source of information.

You have raised some good points. But my question is what are the prospects for LIS degree holders outside the four walls of library building?

I do appreciate U Mr.Barman for thinking of job opportunities for LIS professionals.Recently I heard that Nepolean, the Great wished to be a Librarian if not an Emperor. If it is true he was a person who realised the potential power of knowledge, the most valuable thing on earth.Traditionally,LIS professionals are trained in providing knowledge to others. Why can't these professionals use this knowledge for making their lives in various ways ??Comparing to other professionals and general graduates LIS persons have cutting edge advantages to succeed in any competitive exam for jobs, or starting any business or enterprise which is knowledge based. Library professionals are real princes and princesses of information society.

Thank you, but I need feedback from all of you, regarding what else can be done with a MLISc degree?

Dear sir, as far as alternative for LIS professional is concerned, I think a LIS graduate have more opportunity than to other, like if one does not get job in library he/she can open their own private library, second they can get job  in corporate sector like TCS, Wipro, Accenture, IBM etc as IRC officer. Not only just this if we promote KPO it would be a wonderful opportunity for our profession and also gives respect and dignity to this profession. But the real problem is that we graduates are not that much trend as we should be. It is because of course curriculum structure. Still our curriculum is for librarian but we forget that we are now surviving in the world of IT so our course curriculum should first be revised and should focused on information science.

dear sir, i will not agree with you, i have done my MLIS from IGNOU and in MLIS curriculum is good, and completely on IT based.

sir as per the rule some institute or universities provide the training for freshers. but after complition of training they dont have job. then what shud they do?
